Sloan’s 2016-2017 MBA application deadlines are:

– Round 1: September 15

– Round 2: January 17

– Round 3: April 10

MIT’s Sloan School of Management has brought back their cover letter as part of the application requirement.

Forgoing the typical essay, applicants are asked to submit a cover letter, less than 250 words, seeking a place in the MIT Sloan MBA program. The only specifications are that the letter, “conform to a standard business correspondence,” and that it is addressed to the senior director of admissions, Rod Garcia.

As you compose your cover letter, think about the information that you would provide in a typical job application, when you are trying to convince an employer that you are the very best hire they could make.

– Avoid summarizing your resume: Since you are submitting a resume alongside your cover letter, don’t waste your 250 words summarizing its content. Instead, focus on a few key skills that your work experiences have given you. These skills should be a cornerstone of your personal brand and should also be reflected in your recommendation letters.

– Why Sloan? Just as any employer would want to know why you hope to work for their company, admissions officials need to know why their school is a good fit for you. Highlight specific aspects of Sloan’s culture that appeal to you, whether that is strong connections to tech industries, its location in Boston, or another trait.

– Avoid elaborate storytelling: Some essay prompts encourage applicants to share casual anecdotes or elaborate narratives. This prompt is all about directness. Use simple, forceful phrases that let your enthusiasm shine through while also showing that you have done your research.

If you feel that you have more to say than you can fit in a 250-word cover letter, Sloan does allow applicants to submit optional responses in either multimedia or written format. This can certainly be a helpful tool, but make sure that whatever you submit has a clear purpose – namely, showing the admissions committee something that you were not able to share in any other section of the application.

Optional Information

You also have the option to submit an essay (500 words or less) or a video (2 minutes or less) to address any other aspects of your story that you wish to share with the admissions committee. I recommend that applicants take advantage of this opportunity to communicate their personal brand.
