There are plenty of reasons you might move to the Midwest. Maybe you’re drawn by the lower cost of living. Maybe you just like Chicago. Or maybe you want Stanford to pay for your MBA.

Stanford Graduate School of Business has announced its new Stanford USA MBA Fellowship , which covers all tuition and fees under the condition that recipients agree to work in the Midwest for two consecutive years in the four years following graduation.

Designed to both up the MBA program’s geographical diversity and contribute to the Midwest’s economic development, the fellowship requires that applicants demonstrate strong ties to the region.

Ways of doing this include having lived in a Midwestern state for at least three years, being a current resident of a Midwestern state, graduating from high school in a Midwestern state, or otherwise having some experiences that show commitment to the region.

The program is based on Stanford’s Africa MBA Fellowship , which covers tuition fees for citizens of African countries who return to Africa for work after graduation. Although the USA MBA Fellowship is focusing on the Midwest this year, it may rotate to other regions like the Southeast in the future.

Those interested in the USA MBA Fellowship go through mostly the same application process as other MBA applicants but write an additional essay about their interest in the Midwest. They must also demonstrate need in their financial aid applications.

There are a couple other catches.

Only Round 1 and Round 2 applicants are eligible, but the finalists aren’t announced until May. And if you don’t meet the requirement for working in the Midwest after you graduate, you’re on the hook for the $160,000 or so of Stanford tuition.

Altogether, there are as many as three fellowships up for grabs this year. The fellowship is a good fit for those with ties to the Midwest looking to use their business education to give back to the region, and the requirements for what “giving back to the region” looks like are pretty broad.

According to Simone Hill, an assistant MBA admissions director, “we don’t have any specific stipulations on what we mean by ‘having an impact.’” Rather, the fellowship welcomes anyone who is “interested in bringing everything that they learned back to their region to develop it.”

All in all, then, not a bad deal – use your MBA to contribute to your community and get paid $160,000 give or take for it! For more details about who’s eligible and what the application process involves, see the web page for the Stanford USA MBA Fellowship .
