How important is the MBA essay to your application?

One business school is hoping that a new program will attract more applications from veterans, while other schools shift to teaching in the real world. Meet the newest class at Mendoza—and learn why you should be authentic in your MBA essays. Here’s what’s trending on the business school landscape.

Veterans get $15M in educational support

Top-ranked New York University’s Stern School of Business just announced a $15M endowment from alumnus Lorenzo Fertitta and his brother to provide massive tuition breaks for U.S. military veterans. Thanks to the gift, eligible students will only pay $30,000 per year, a steep break from regular tuition, which is around $66,500.

Raghu Sundaram, Vice Dean of MBA Programs, commented: “A part of it is professional: connecting them to alumni who are themselves veterans and who can act as mentors, assisting in this transition process and to corporations who hold special events for veterans. And a part of it is social, allowing them to bond with each other even as they get to know the school and the city.”

Meet Mendoza’s new MBA class

South Bend, Indiana is one of America’s premier college towns and is also home to the http://mendoza.nd.edu/" target... University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. Like other top MBA programs around the country, it attracts a diverse grouping of tomorrow’s business leaders. Among them in this year’s class is a chemist who loves poetry and a brand manager of a kickboxing company.

This year’s first year class includes 121 students overall, the same number as last year—in spite of an application drop from 735 in 2015 to 646 this past cycle. And in a trend we’ve seen at other top business schools across the country, the average GMAT scores for new students nudged one point higher to 683.

“The Notre Dame MBA Class of 2018 was selected, not just based on their career potential and academic prowess, but because they have far-reaching goals and aspirations beyond the acquisition of business knowledge and career advancement,” says Kristin McAndrew, director of graduate business programs. Business schools get real

Business schools across the country are increasingly looking at the way they mold their future MBAs. For as long as anybody can remember, business schools relied on case studies. But now curricula are embracing something different: asking students to solve real world business dilemmas in real time.

“What we had to do was rebalance the amount of curriculum that was learning versus doing—or applying,” said Sarah Fisher Gardial, the dean at the https://tippie.uiowa.edu/" tar... University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business. The school requires that at least 60 credits include some kind of experimental coursework, though many students exceed that number.

“I speak directly with customers and sales reps about their needs, opinions of our services, and I take that and synthesize it into the overall marketing strategy,” noted one recent Tippie graduate who said that the curriculum revamp helps her in her everyday professional activities. MBA essay authenticity

While your score on the GMAT or GRE remains the most important business school admissions factor, according to Kaplan research over the years, you should nonetheless shower your application essays with plenty of careful thought and attention as well. And while there’s no magic bullet in writing a great MBA essay, experts say it should be both compelling and authentic. Admissions officers know a phony when they read one.

“We are looking to bring in students who will be inclusive leaders and who will bring people together,” says Bruce DelMonico, assistant dean of admissions at thehttp://som.yale.edu/" target=&... Yale University School of Management. ( U.S. News & World Report)
